About the Villa du Verger (Orchard Villa)

The Orchard

A 1930s barn transformed into a charming retreat

La Villa du Verger, whose rental unit is located on the ground floor, was both a former winemaker’s house and a farm building constructed in 1930 in Valergues. Originally designed to house livestock, this former barn stood for nearly a century before we decided to give it a new lease on life. The building featured a wooden floor on the upper level, and the stone exterior walls date back to that era.

The Origins of the Orchard

In the 1970s, an annex was demolished—which explains the presence of a few large blocks of cut stone in the garden—and the courtyard was transformed into a garden with fruit trees and a vegetable garden by a priest, Father Louis. It is from this garden that the name “Villa du Verger” naturally derives. As a remnant of the building’s origins, there is still a large trough carved from a single block of stone, facing the well, as well as stone feeders that have now been repurposed as pots for herbs, and old barrels.

The Metamorphosis

We carried out a complete renovation, designed to blend the charm of the past with modern comforts: exceptional insulation for a home of this era, air conditioning, fiber-optic internet, and carefully selected materials. The result is a bright and serene 70 m² home that is both authentic and fully equipped. The upper floor was renovated in 2008, followed by the ground floor in 2021, which was then converted into a furnished vacation rental in 2026.

A garden designed as an orchard, not as a lawn

All around us, our walled garden—with no neighbors directly across—was historically designed as a true Mediterranean orchard rather than simply an outdoor space. Fruit trees, self-service herb garden, swimming pool, shaded arbor: each element has been chosen so that you can enjoy a vibrant outdoor space, sheltered from prying eyes and noise. No pesticides are used, and every effort is made to foster and preserve a natural environment conducive to local biodiversity.

An eco-friendly approach in our daily lives

Beyond the building’s energy-efficient renovation, we pay special attention to the environmental impact of your stay: eco-friendly welcome and cleaning products, sustainable management of the pool water using the historic cut-stone well, recycling facilities provided, and fruits and herbs picked directly from our orchard rather than purchased. This initiative, which is already underway, is now driving us to pursue the Clé Verte certification—an international benchmark for sustainable tourism—in addition to our 3-star “Meublé de Tourisme” classification.

Why Valergues?

We’ve been in the area for 44 years, and we wanted the charm of a small, peaceful village while still being close to Montpellier—just a 15-minute ride away by TER train, with a nearby highway exit and close enough to the beaches. The village square won us over with its shops, which are always bustling even in the off-season. Our favorite beach is Espiguette, thanks to its wide stretches of sand and peaceful atmosphere. Hospitality and sharing are what drive us, and our guests’ satisfaction is our greatest reward.
